Specialty care, and a referral you don't have to chase
A referral should be easy for your team and reassuring for the family. Here is what you can expect when you send a patient to Dr. Alexis Kirkland-Miller.
Collaborative by default
Your patient stays your patient. We report back after the evaluation, share the treatment plan, and tell you when the case is ready for restorative work.
Specialist-level assessment
Every referral is evaluated by Dr. Alexis Kirkland-Miller, a Howard University-trained orthodontist. You get an orthodontist's read on the case, not a screening.
Complex cases welcome
Early interceptive treatment, surgical and jaw discrepancy cases, impacted and ectopic teeth, and pre-restorative alignment are all routine here.
Your patient gets seen
We contact the family directly, and we hold appointments six days a week including evenings, so a referral does not stall on scheduling.

Yes. We confirm when the patient has been seen, share our findings and proposed treatment plan, and keep you updated at the points that matter for your own treatment planning, including when the patient is ready for restorative work.
Around age 7. That is when the first permanent molars and incisors are usually in, which lets Dr. Kirkland-Miller assess crowding, crossbites, and jaw growth. Many of those patients are simply monitored rather than treated straight away, so an early look costs the family nothing but gives you both a plan. See our early orthodontic treatment page for what that involves.
Yes. Dr. Kirkland-Miller regularly coordinates care with general dentists, periodontists, and oral surgeons, including aligning teeth ahead of implants or restorations and managing the orthodontic phases of jaw surgery cases.
Please do not attach records to the referral form. Submit the referral first, then call our office at (301) 383-0514 and our team will give you the current secure route for sending radiographs and clinical records.
